“Above & Beyond”
by POSE (Jordan Nickel)
About the exhibition
For Jordan Nickel, more commonly known as POSE, the works in “Above & Beyond” represents a new candor in subject matter and aesthetic refinement through restraint.
This shift is most pronounced in the “Emote” series. These paintings focus directly on the nucleus of his work: the emotion that all is built around. Stripping back all the layers to stark dramatic color relation and bold composition brings new power to each expression.
Also included in the exhibition, the series “Runner”, heralds similar Day-Glo intensity with a blend of geometric abstraction & graphic pop figurative.
Lastly, “Rouse”. An abstracted self-portrait of sorts depicts a bashful artist presenting his work to the audience. The rest of the gallery if filled with POSE’s signature had pulled screen prints with serve as a mini-retrospective and greater context for the new works
BIO
Jordan Nickel, a.k.a. POSE, blends elements of pop art, comic books, cartoons, and street art in his energetic, fragmented murals and paintings on canvas. POSE embraces a crisp illustration style and vibrant, high-contrast color palettes. He got his start in graffiti at age 12, enticed by the colorful lettering. POSE graduated from Kansas City Art Institute and has since exhibited in Basel, Dubai, London, New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles, among other cities. He is a member of the street art collective Mad Society Kings and the West Coast art collective The Seventh Letter.
Distinguished in his inventive ability to take everyday moments and introduce them into his modern pop art paintings to communicate something much deeper where human emotions like love, loss, and triumph, are presented in a complex union of vivid colors and layered application that aims for something much more profound than what’s at the literal, surface level.
